The Holme, a mansion located in Regent’s Park, London, was designed by Decimus Burton and built in 1818 by James Burton, who subsequently lived there. The mansion was the second villa to be built in Regent’s Park and the first to be designed or constructed by the Burton family. The house consists of two storeys above ground, as well as offices contained in a basement. The entrance is under an Ionic-style portico and pediments, and it has a bow or rotunda decorated by four columns, surmounted by an attic and covered with a well-proportioned cupola.
The mansion underwent renovations in 1911 with the addition of wings by Bertie Crewe and again in 1935 when a balustrade replaced an existing dome. Prior to 1984, The Holme was owned by the Crown Estate. The property was then owned by the University of London before being bought by Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, a former crown prince and defence minister of Saudi Arabia, from a Kuwaiti investor for £15 million in 1988. The property was then owned by Abdullah bin Khalid Al Saud, Saudi Arabia’s representative to the United Nations in Vienna and ambassador to Austria, along with his family.
In March 2023, the mansion was put up for sale by its then owner, Abdullah bin Khalid Al Saud, for a reported price of £250 million, making it the most expensive private residence in the UK. The mansion was repossessed due to an expired loan, and its sale was seen as the quickest and easiest way to repay the loan. The mansion, which sits on four acres of land in Regent Park, is expected to be in high demand among London’s wealthiest residents and wealthy foreigners who have been flocking to the city in recent years.
